Galilee Causing Anxiety NOTES AND COMMENTS Australians For the Sales (By “The Watcher.”) Galilee, who appears- likely to start favourite in the Wellington Stakes today, may possibly not be at her best. She is causing her trainer, A. Cook, some anxiety, as over the week-end she developed a cough. It was in evidence yesterday morning ou the track, and,, while it may be nothing serious, her trainer is naturally worried at this stage of the proceedings. If she starts to-day it may be taken that the trouble has passed off. Likes Trantham. Spiral, whose best form has been shown on the Trentham track, worked nicely yesterdav morning. He seemed to appreciate the sting being out of the going, and as similar conditions will prevail today he may be one to spring the usual cup surprise. Does Not Impress. , Silver Streak does not impress as being in the same form to-day as he was twelve months ago when it took a horse like Silver Ring to beat him in the Telegraph Handicap. Classy Thm-jw-oltliS. Mother Superior and Burnish, two of the three-year-olus in the Wellington .Stakes, sprinted very well yesterday morning. Mother Superior showed that she was in form by winning a race at Auckland, hut this is the first indication that Burnish is returning to her best. She is a brilliant galloper when right, and if she can turn on her real form to-day she will make it interesting. Tracks Suit Him, 11 Duce is one of the two-year-olds who have been troubled by the hard tracks this season, but since coming on to the present going at Trentham he has been bitting out much more freely, and . he looks like running well at the meeting.

He possesses plenty of pace, as he demonstrated at Woodville last month. Cup Favonrtie Fit. Vintage looks a much better horse now than he did a couple o£ months ago, even though he was then winning the Fendalton and Metropolitan Handicaps. He has come through his Auckland racing greatly benefited, and he looks the part to create a fresh weight-carrying record in the cup to-day. The smaller field than usual should ensure a good run, for he cannot afford to be unduly checked under 9.9. RereaMi Possible Non-starter. It is reported from Palmerston North that Rereatu may be reserved until Voitre gets back in the saddle. He will be eligible to ride on Saturday. Rereatu is engaged to-day in the Telegraph Handicap, and is a form prospect, especially with the sting out of the ground. Scratched. Cawbeen was withdrawn from all her Wellington engagements at 4.25 p.m. yesterday. Australians Arrive. To attend the New Zealand yearling sales to be held to-morrow seven Australian racing men arrived in Wellington by the Maunganui yesterday. They are Messrs. G. R. Price, J. T. Cush, W Booth, R. W. bfac-kay, G. N. Magill, E. Moss, and R. McLean. A Winning Sire. Attention is drawn to the advertise nient in to-day’s issue of the yearlings ■ being offered on behalf of the Mana Stud, Hawke’s Bay. Maestro is the first winner by Siegfried, having succeeded in the Nursery Stakes at Tattersall’s Meeting, Sydney, on December 27 last, in a style which impressed the critics. Siegfried’s second crop of yearlings show great promise, and will stand inspection. Answer to Corrosp<(ndent. “Kaiapoi”: The last race on the Hutt course was won by Mr. C. H. Gorton’s blaster Alix, and the first race on the Trentham course by Mr. R. T. Turnbull’s Boris. The Khedive for South Africa. Sir Joseph Robinson, the well-known South African sportsman, has completed the purchase of the three-year-old colt, The Khedive, by Chief Ruler from Egyptian Flower, and intends to race the colt at the Takapuna meeting on January 26. The Khedive, who was bred and raced by Mr. J. M. Cameron, of Hastings, will remain in that trainer's care until he is shipped to Cape Town in February. This is the third winner that Egyptian Flower has produced for her breeder. She is by Egypt, a full brother to Desert Gold, from the imported mare Mint, by Mintagon. The price paid was a substantial one, but the actual figure has not been disclosed. FAREWELL VISIT Lord Bledisloe at Trentham (By “The Watcher.”) His Excellency the Goveruor-General, Lord Bledisloe, will pay a farewell visit to Trentham to-day, on the occasion of the opening of the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting. His Excellency has been, among his varied active pursuits in New Zealand, a very good friend to racing, and to mark its appreciation, and to bid him a cordial farewell to-day, arrangements have been made by the club for the procedure of arrival aud departure to follow precisely the lines of the visit to the course of the Duke of Gloucester. Lord Bledisloe will arrive by car and enter the course through the stewards’ private gate, drive on to the track and down the straight before alighting at the lawn, in order to give the racing public the opportunity of bidding him a cordial and appropriate farewell. SAM SMITH COMING Will Race Second and Third Days i Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, January 21. Sam Smith, jn charge of A. McAulay, was shipped to Wellington to-night and will race at Trentham on Thursday and Saturday. Baek Thrust, who is engaged in the Apprentices’ Handicap at Trentham tomorrow, is a three-year-old gelding by Rapier from Retrospect, and is owned by Sir Charles Clifford. He started three times as a two-year-old, and although not gaining a place he showed marked promise. He has not yet been produced this season, but in recent gallops he has given every indication that successes for him are near at hand. H e will be ridden by the stable apprentice A, C. Messervy, who has done a fair amount of race riding and will conlpare more than favourably with the majority of the boys engaged.

TO-DAY’S BUN FIGHT “Pipitea” Attends the Party (By “Pipitea.") A goodly crowd assembled at a Bun Fight or Coroboree to celebrate Wellington’s Anniversary. Shirley Dene was the Hostis, and received in a Diatomous gown of Love-in-the-Mist, with spangles of Heather Glow and a Silver Streak running down the straight six. The earliest guest was Bold Jim (who was a Tunneljpr in the war), who greeted the lady, “Ah, Madame, I see I’m the Fersen here 1” When the barrier was released, the Cup Bearer circulated the Alchemic Dark Red Vintage and merry was the throng. Brown Betty, a Star Artist, who was beautifully Invoice, sung the Jubilee Song, and was acclaimed a Great Star. The intellectual world was represented by Cardinal Moon, a Severe, dignified Emissary, who soon showed signs of Abdication and retired to Burnish his Silver Wings. Miss Penelope wanted to return home nt midnight. She Coyle-y said, “I Rereatu go !” “But, where to?” asked her swain. “I don’t care Wheriko!’’ At one stage, Red Manfred, a Beau Gallante from Friesland, wanted to Cuddle Princess Doreen, who was Going Gay. This angered Red Rufus, a Gay Boy with Hot Stuff hair, so they formed a ring for Tout le Monde to see. An Umpire was appointed, a Purse arranged, and the Fracas began. Ginger piled up a Round Score of points, but his opponent handed out a Cyclonic Knock Out and a Back Thrust and was given the Palm, but it was Some Shamble I The chairman, who looked like a Heritage from The Ark. danced with Gay Marigold, a Sunee Nightlass, Fulojoy, but did not Arouse enthusiasm by his riddle. “Why does the State Bank Guarantee?” “Because it Autopay I” The party continued till the Moonbeam was blotted out by the Red Sun, when the chairman charred his glass and said, “This is Orby's Last!” And so they wended their Spiral way home.
