GIRLS’ LIFE BRIGADE

Conference at Wellington The second annual conference of the Girls’ Life Brigade was held recently at the home of Mrs. Gibb, Island Bay. The report presented revealed a steady growth in membership activities, special mention being made of the pioneer work of Mrs. Grocott, Pleasant Point, •Canterbury, who initiated the movement in New Zealand and who guided it over a period of years. Greetings were received from many officers and friends, including cables from the National Brigade Headquarters. London, and from Miss M. Jennie Street, who, as a representative of the English headquarters, had assisted in the development of the work here. At present there are throe battalions in existence, Auckland, Wellington ami Dunedin, with several isolated companies, making a total of 32 companies with 78 officers and 612 girls. The cadet sections number 11, with 148 members. Some of the conference time was

spent in discussing practical points in the management and working of companies and in the adjustment to New Zealand conditions of the English regulations regarding syllabi of study for the various badges. Mrs. Gibbs, Wellington, was elected president for the forthcoming year, and Miss Lilian- Busfield, Auckland, was re-elected secretary. The business of the executive will continue to be conducted mainly by correspondence, as the members are from different parts of New Zealand. The next annual conference will be held at Dunedin.
