ROWING REGATTA

Wellington Club Wins Mothes Shield EVENTS IN HEAVY RAIN Wellington Rowing Club won the triangular points contest in the fifteenth annual Mothes Shield regatta, which was held on the harbour on Saturday over the Koro Koro course. The previous holder of the shield was the Petone Club. Although the water under the hills was fairly smooth fitful gusts of wind that blew' across the course made rowing conditions not the best. Despite the heavy rain Quite a large crowd watched the races from the Hutt Road, and for their benefit the latest policy of the Wellington Rowing Association in enforcing a strictly punctual programme proved to be of great value. In several races crews were disqualified for holding up the starts, and the general effet of the policy was that the programme was completed in fast enough time for it to hold a full amount of interest. Eleven races were held, with 38 crews competing, and all were held over the mile. Wellington did particularly well to win the shield, as in three of the races, senior pairs, senior fours, and youths’ fours, the only crews competing were from Star and Petone Clubs. By the tenth race Wellington was in a safe position. Points were allocated five for a win and two for second place; Wellington finished with a total of 31 points, followed by Petone with 28 and Star Boating Club with 18.
