PLUNKET SHIELD

Wellington-Auckland Match NORTHERNERS’ 401 Lamason Takes Five Wickets For 67 By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, January 18. After an unpromising start Auckland retrieved its position in the Plunket Shield cricket match against Wellington, which opened at Eden Park to-day in hot, dry weather. Although two wickets fell cheaply, the Test of the side by consistent batting took the total to 401 before the innings closed ’ and stumps were drawn. The wicket was all in favour of the batsmen, and the outfield was fast. Wellington will open its first innings wiien play is resumed at 11 o’clock to-morrow morning. Although Auckland gained an initial advantage by winning the toss, the morning’s play did not show the home team in a particularly favourable light. The opening batsmen, Mills and Whitelaw, were early on the defensive to Blundell, and, after bowling four successive maidens, the Wellington captain beat Mills with a change of pace, and bowled him. 15-1-4. Weir started confidently, but Whitelaw was rarely impressive. Blundell’s first bowling spell of 11 overs yielded 13 runs, scored off only six balls. Tricklebank, Morgan and Lamason had been used in fairly rapid succession at the other end, but after an hour’s play Griffiths replaced Blundell. Off his second ball he. had Weir caught behind the wickets. 45-2-18. There was a brighter patch when Vivian came in, and immediately set about hitting Griffiths off his length. The Auckland captain provided half an hour of delightful cricket until Blundell, taking his second bowling spell at the other end, dismissed him l.b.w. with a ball that kept low. 88-3-31. A Good Start. Townsend joined Whitelaw, who was still batting in rather laboured fashion. The first 100 appeared in 99 minutes, and Townsend soon found weaknesses in the attack. McLeod, Tricklebank and Morgan were all tried before lunch, but the adjournment came with the score at 124 for three wickets (Whitelaw 44, Townsend 23). Tricklebank and Blundell bowled on resumption. Whitelaw reached 50 in > 132 minutes, and then narrowly missed playing Blundell on. Ten minutes later the total reached 150, and Blundell changed ends, Griffiths being the other bowler. Whitelaw was now batting with much more confidence, while there was crisp assurance about all Townsend’s shots. Once the coach was beaten by a change of pace from Blundell, but an appeal for l.b.w. was not successful. However, in the next over Townsend hit out wildly at a short ball from Griffiths, who took a good catch. 167-4-44. Sale opened brightly. Tricklebank and McLeod were brought on in a double bowling change, but with 200 up in 190 minutes, Blundell and Lamason bowled with the new ball. In the latter’s second over Sale reached out to a ball well away from him and was smartly caught by Rainbird at second slip. 217-5-27. Meanwhile Whitelaw had continued on an untroubled way, and reached his first I’luuket Shield century in 216 minutes. Just on the tea adjournment, Whitelaw missed in playing back to Griffiths, and was out l.b.w. He had hit ten fours. 256-6-115. After tea, the Wellington attack was definitely tiring, and Bush and Wallace commenced to take toll of Blundell. The third century appeared in 260 minutes. Wallace was giving a particularly stylish display, but after the pair had added 60 in 40 minutes, Bush was bowled in attempting a big hit off Lamason. 316-7-36. Delightful Batting. Wallace continued to give a delightful batting exhibition, and reached 50 in 67 minutes, but then lost McCoy, who, after playing some nice shots on the leg side, was caught behind the wicket off Lamason. 367-8-25. The end was not long delayed. Edmonds was bowled by Lamason after a quite promising start. 356-9-S. Four Hundred Up. Cowie also shaped well, and the fourth hundred appeared in 340 minutes. Then Wallace, in playing forward to Lamason, who was bowling round the wicket, was given out 1.b.w., and the innings closed for 401. Stumps were then drawn, Vivian waiving the right to make Wellington bat for three minutes. Tlie Wellington bowling had been flattered by some of the Auckland batsmen, particularly Whitelaw, but Blundell and Lamason both bowled steadily. Griffiths was erratic, and was bowled far too much, whereas surprisingly little use was made of McLeod. The Wellington fielding was excellent. Scores were as follow:— AUCKLAND. First Innings. P. E.
