TO FLY TO SINGAPORE
New British Flying Boats (British Official Wireless.) (Received January 17, 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, January 16. Four new flying boats with which No. 205 Flying Boat Squadron, stationed at Singapore, is to be re-equipped, yesterday left Pembroke Dock on an 8000mile formation flight to Singapore. This is the first time an overseas squadron has been re-equipped by air. The machines are manned by the personnel of No. 210 Flying Boat Squadron under Squadron Leader Lang. They are due to arrive at Singapore on March 2, stopping for four days at Naples, two days at Basra and five days at Karachi. i BEACON NOT LIT Complaint by Pilot of Mail Plane (Received January 18, 10.10 a.m.) Darwin, January 17. Captain Wilson, pilot of the Empire mail plane which made a forced landing at Point Stuart, said that the reason he was unable to find Darwin was because the Darwin beacon was unlighted. He would not have attempted the Timor Sea crossing for a million pounds if he had known that the aerodrome beacon would not be lighted. He was actually over the Darwin headland without recognising it, due to the terrific storm prevailing. 70-PASSENGER PLANE Company’s Experiment (Received January IS, 1.30 a.m.) London, January 17. Imperial Airways Ltd. is constructing as an experiment an air liner to carry 70 passengers besides the crew. EXPERTS’ EVIDENCE Lindbergh Ransom Notes Flemington, January 16. Four more handwriting experts, testifying for the State, to-day further identified Hauptmann’s handwriting as the same as that of the ransom notes. This brings the total to eight experts who express the absolute conviction that both are a product of the same person. The contention of the defence that Fisch copied Hauptmann’s style in order to incriminate the defendant, while he himself was responsible for the crime, was considered untenable by the experts, who said that it could not be done.
