HUTT VALLEY NEWS

A grant of £25, the same as that given last year, was made to the Wellington District Free Ambulance by the Hutt Valley Electric Power Boaru at its meeting yesterday.

That he did not want to encourage the practice of aviators using the Hutt Park was stressed by the chairman, Mr. W. G. Meldrum, at the meeting of the Hutt Park Committee last evening. He said that two planes had used the park recently, but as it was not a registered landing ground he did not think the practice should be encouraged.

Reference to the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board’s load building scheme was made at the meeting of the board yesterday, when it was shown that 210 ranges had been installed for the following districts: —Lower Hutt, 66; Petone, 31; Eastbourne and bays, 63; Upper Hutt, 34; IVestern area, 16. Nine were waiting to be installed. Under the No. 2 scheme, four had been installed at Lower Hutt, and one each . at Heretaunga and the Western area. ■ The engineer and general manager, Mr. E. F. Hollands, said that now' the holidays were over there were more applications coming in again. Members expressed satisfaction. TENNIS MANAGEMENT Sub-Association Meeting The management committee of the Hutt Valley Lawn Tennis Sub-Associa-tion, at a recent meeting, voiced its appreciation of the expressions of thanks and pleasure received from players of both teams in the representative match played in December between Manawatu and Hutt Valley. The capable and hospitable ’ arrangements were said to be much appreciated, especially those to do with umpiring. All players were relieved of that duty, members of the management committee and some spectators undertaking it. The match which the sub-association hoped to arrange with Wairarapa had to be abandoned, the latter having fixtures yet to be played, with Wellington, Wanganui, Hawke’s Bay and Manawatu. The decision as to the suitable combination of the association’s colours, maroon and navy, in blazers for representative players, also the design of a monogram for them, was left to Messrs. H. G. Flux and A. G. Smith. Entries had been received for the Anniversary Day tourney (mixed doubles) to be run on the Yankee principle, and open only to members of clubs affiliated to the Hutt Valley association. More post entries were expected to bring the tourney well up to the level of previous years. Reference was made to the excellent . results achieved by Hutt Val’ey players who took part in the tournaments at Martinborough and Muritai luring the Christmas holidays. There was no doubt that players from the Hutt Valley were making their mark in first ] grade tennis, it was stated. COMPARATIVE FIGURES i i Electric Power Board Sales ] Comparisons of power sales from < April 1 to December 31 for 1933 and 1 1934 respectively were laid before the ]

Hutt Valley Electric Power Board at its meeting yesterday by the engineer and general manager, Mr. E. F. Hollands.

In the following comparisons the figures for the previous year are given » in parentheses:—Domestic lighting, t £27,539/2/5 (£27,662/15/1), a decrease , of £123/12/8; commercial lighting, f £8215/13/1 (£7666/11/7), an increase of . £549/1/6; heating and cooking, £19,400. j 4/5 (£17,902/15/3), an increase of £1497 i 9/2; water heating, £7277/4/11 (£6832 t 6/5), an increase of £444/18/6; power, . £15,713/11/6 (£19592/10/2), a decrease of £3B7S/18/8; public lighting, £3654 . 10/7 (£3613/6/11), an increase of £4l ; 3/8. discounts, £10,571/5/1 (£B6BB > 7/1), an increase of £IBS2/18/-; to- , tals, £7l/229/1/10 (£74,581/18/4), a ■ decrease of £3352/16/6. It would be noticed, said Mr. Hollands, that heating and cooking showed a substantial increase, and under that heading the increase would gradually improve as the result of the range load building scheme. The December quarter, 1933, saw the final power account of the Public Works Department, I Tawa Flat construction, the whole of 1 the load for that work being discon- ( nected at December 31, 1933. The decrease was attributed to the closing down of those works, but from now on the power totals should gradually improve. The gross totals showed an allround improvement, but were reduced by the extra discount passed on to consumers. “I am of the opinion,” said Mr. Hollands, “that we have reached rock bottom in revenue loss, and from now on we can confidently expect a general increase.” CRICKET MATCHES Draw for Anniversary Day The Hutt Valley Cricket Association’s draw for Anniversary Day is as follows. ■ A grade: General Motors Av. General Motors B, North Park No. 2; Waiwetu v. Randwick,■ Trafalgar Park No. 1. B grade: Randwick v. Taita A, Nai ■Nai Reserve No. 3; Waiwetu v. Taita B, Nai Nai Reserve No. 1.
