Ricearton Horses For Trentham YESTERDAY’S GALLOPS Notable Effort by Polydora and Nightly Dominion Special Service. Christelitirdi, January 17. The plough track was again in general use at Ricearton to-day, and two exceptions all the horses to race at Tren'ham next week were galloped on it. The trac-k was well watered overnight, but some fast times, nevertheless, were re; corded, a notable effort being that of Polydora and Nightly over six furlong-. Variant and llostis reeled off half a mile in 50 2-5, both finishing on well. .Silly Owl and Black Thrust ran six furlongs comfortably in 1.20. Rocket, joined by Knock Out at the six furlongs, covered nine furlongs iu 2.1, the last three in 41 3-5. Rocket did not shape as well as in some recent gallops. Landru and Let Fly ran six furlongs in 1.20 1-5. The former, by Shambles from Love in the Mist, is in F. D. Jones’s stable, and is a most. promising galloper. Cup Bearer galloped five furlongs m 1-3 4-5. , ~ Bun Fight recorded 49 2-5 for halt a mile. Cranford Goes Freely. Cranford went very freely over six furlongs in 1.17 2-5. He will be ridden at Trentham by I*. Atkins, who had the mounts on him nt Ellerslie. Polydora finished three lengths in front, of Nightly at the end of six furlongs in the exceptionally good time of 1.14 1-5, the first three taking 36 1-5, and the first four 40. They carried fairly even weights, and their riders were instructed to keep together, but Polydora was made to stage a race of it, and she set Nightiy a very severe task. No doubt the mare has made marked improvement, of late, and her trainer may consider taking her to Trentham for the last two days of next week's meeting. Nightly's effort was full of merit, and on its own it would have been considered brilliant. He ran home his last half-mile in 50. and although the atmosphere was very clear, very little noise could be heard from him until he commenced to slow up, and even then it was not by any means pronounced. It is possible that his trouble may not be as serious as it was regarded last week. Hie owner, Mr. J. A. McDougall, was present to see him work. Abdication and Scratchmere Scar reeled off half a mile in 50. finishing together. The former will carry 6.12 in the Wellington Stakes, and will be ridden by H. Mackinnon. Tout le Monde finished in front of Great Star after covering seven furlongs in 1.30. Emissary and Moonbeam ran half a mile in 50, the last three furlongs in 37. Both will race well next week. Sam Smith, assisted on the journey by Anvil, and Hostile, covered seven furlongs in 1.29 2-5. Heather Glow and Haere Tonu finished abreast after taking 51 for half a mile. Silver Sight, joined by Some Shamble near the seven furlongs post, traversed a mile in 1.44, the first half in 50 1-5. Some Shamble, who carried a much bigger weight than his mate, covered his seven furlongs in 1.32 and finished in front. Colossian conceded Capital a big weight and finished practically on terms after covering six furlongs in 1.17 3-5. Colombo and Gold Cross ran half a mile in 51, the last three furlongs in 3S. The former, by Paper Money from Halina, a granddam of Compris, shapes well for a comparative novice and may effect a surprise at Trentham.
A’ini ago at His Best. Vintage was sent from the nine-furlong post, and Jolly Beggar joined him at the six furlongs. The latter, however, was slow to move off and tailed off throughout. Vintage took 52 for his first half, 1.19 3-5 for six furlongs, and 1.33 for_seven, while tho full journey occupied 1.58 1-5. These figures could have been improved upon if Jolly Beggar had been of tiny use to him. - As it was Vintage was kept in cheek during the middle stages to keep back to his companion, and did* not have the full pace on until turning for home, his last three furlongs taking 38 3-5. There is no doubt that. Vintage is in remarkably good order, and he will be capable of putting up a solid fight in the Wellington Cup. Tunneller finished two lengths in front of Final Shot at the end of six furlongs in 1.18 2-5. Tunneller finished on solidly. and will hold his own at Trentham. On the grass Horowhcnua covered six furlongs in 1.18 3-5. Penelope, carrying a good weight, reeled off half a mile in 50. Copyist has rejoined the active workers following his short spell since returning from Ellerslie. Patrole has joined T. 11. Gillett's stabm, and later will be given a course of schooling over the battens. Two recent additions to the Chokebore stable are Pannier, a two-year-old chestnut gelding by Day Comet from Gamebag, and Sky Pilot, a two-year-old chestnut colt by Day Comet from Swoopalong. The majority of the Ricearton horses for Trentham will go north on Saturday. S. Barr’s team, comprising Silver Sight, Colossian, Capital and Some Shamble, will travel to-morrow night.
