“Age of Innocence”
Wallace Beery
yiVIDLY demonstrating that the
love problems of the young people of this modern age are as nothing compared to those which confronted the youth of two generations ago, “The Age of Innocence,” starring Irene Dunne and John Boles, is coming to Wellington shortly. RKO-Radio’s picturisation of Edith Wharton’s Pulitzer Prize novel of the same name presents Miss Dunne in the role of a beautiful but disillusioned American girl who has been the victim of a loveless marriage and who seeks to right the mistake and find happiness with the man she loves, only to be balked at every turn by the hidebound social tenets of the era. John Boles, as the son of an ultra-blueblooded New York family, is the object of Miss Dunne’s love, but he, too. is the victim of parents who. have a penchant for “mani' aging” their children’s affairs of the heart. They marry him to a girl of their choice, not his own. Julie Haydon enacts the difficult role of the “selected” wife. The mutual love of Miss Dunne and Boles travels a road that is filled with obstacles which intensify the drama and heighten the glamour of their romance. The ultimate outcome, it is said, comes as a complete surprise to those who are not familiar with Miss Wharton’s story and the stage play by Margaret Ayer Barnes.
WALLACE BEERY, infected with the germ of showmanship because of bis portrayal of the role of P. T. Barnum in 20th Century’s “The Mighty Barnum,” has gone in for aviation in a bigger and better way. As Hollywood’s foremost flying star, he has become the owner of a new six-passen-ger Bellanca with a top speed of 240 miles an hour and a cruising speed of 180. It is his fifth plane in Seven years of steady flying. Beery estimates that he has at least half a million flying miles behind him. He has never had a serious mishap, and has had only rare forced landings. His fastest flight was from Hollywood to New York, about 3000 miles, a feat he performed in 19 hours and 23 minutes In his new plane he expects to make the flight in less than 15 hours His first long trip in the new Bellanca, after completing “The Mighty Barnum’’ which will be released by United Artists, will be a nomstop flight from Hollywood to Mexico City.
