The Imperial Airways air liner Athena, bringing Empire air mails, when attempting a night flight from Koepang to Darwin, ran into a storm overnight and was blown far off its course. The pilot wirelessed distress messages. which were picked up in Darwin. saying, "I believe lam lost. My. petrol is almost exhausted.” Finally lie was forced to land at Point Stuart, -60 miles east of Darwin. The machine was not damaged. A Quantas plane immediately began to search, and located the Athena early this morning, but the former damaged a propeller when landing. It immediately transferred petrol to the Athena, which completed its journey to Darwin. The mails are nearly two days late, mainly owing to a mishap at Karachi. ACROSS AMERICA Flying Record Broken New York, January 15. Major James R. Doolittle broke the trans-continental flight record for transport aeroplanes by flying from Los Angeles to New York in lOhr. 59min. The previous record was llhr. 4min, by Captain Eddie Rickenbaeker.
