OBITUARY
Mrs. Martha McPhail The death has occurred at Eltham of Mrs. Martha McPhail, aged 95 years. Born at Gervan, Ayrshire, Scotland, she settled in Tasmania with her parents at the age of 13. The ship in which the family left Great Britain took four months on the voyage and many privations were suffered by the passengers. The conditions ’ under which the pioneers lived were very hard and food was excessively dear, but members of the family, who were breaking in farm laud, struggled on. In 1860 Mrs. McPhail was married to the late Mr. A. McPhail. They nad nine children. On the death of her husband Mrs. McPhail came to New Zealand, where some members of the family were already settled. She is survived by many descendants, including six great-grandchildren. Her daughter is Mrs. A. Coplestone (Eltham). and there are tliree sons, Messrs. Andrew McPhail (Kairanga), Alex McPhail (Matamata) and Archibald McPhail (Ngaere).
