A resolution of sympathy with the superintendent of the Petone Fire Brigade, Mr. J. P- Gaynor, in the recent death of his son was carried at the meeting of the Fire Board yesterday.
Some confusion appears to exist concerning the remark made by a member of the Petone Borough Council on Monday evening. He stated that there were holes in the floor of the Cuba Street bathing shed on the Petone foreshore big. enough for people to put their feet in. Some wrongly gained the impression that the reference was to the McKenzie Baths.
The secretary of the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board, Mr. O. Silbery, reported to the meeting of the board last evening that, during December nine new services, ten new cookers, four coppers, two caliphonts, one hottentot, three hotplates, and 24 new meters were installed, nine cookers renewed, 57 meters changed, and 42 meters repaired at the works.
That the whole of the Belmont main had been completed, was reported by the secretary, Mr. 0. Silbery, at the meeting of the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board last evening. He stated that a marked improvement was noticeable in the pressure. The work of removing the old mains would be completed within a few clays, .when they would be cleaned and made ready for use in other areas.
The report of the Wanganui Automobile Association that the Wanganui River Road should be used only by experienced drivers, and that it was not recommended for general use, was criticised by Cr. J. Marumaru at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui County Council. He said that he thought the report was unjustified because the road was in good order and was frequently negotiated by women drivers. His view was supported by other councillors.
A letter from the Petone Fire Brigade asking for a donation toward the expense of sending a team to the United Fire Brigades’ Association demonstration to be held in Blenheim in February was considered by the Fire Board yesterday afternoon. The superintendent. Mr. J. P. Gaynor, said the brigade in the past had sent a number of teams .away. He thought it would be encouraging to allow a small donation, and suggested £7/10/for the six men who would attend the demonstration. On the motion of Mr. J. Kerr, a grant of £5/5/- was made. COOKING BY GAS New Hutt Valley Scheme A new scheme for the installation of gas cookers was outlined by the secretary, Mr. O. Silbery, at the meeting of the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board last evening. He suggested the board should make its terms, for a period at least, no cash deposit and a reduced monthly payment of 7/6 instead of 10/-; also cookers taken back should be paid for at 25/-. He thought there- would be cases where the board would have to reduce the payment of 7/6. The chairman, Mr. W. G. Lodder, said he thought the best thing to do would be to leave discretionary power to the secretary to reduce the charge. On the motion of Mr. A. Scholefield it was decided to reduce the monthly payment to 7/6 and 5/-, according to the value of cookers, which up to March 31 will be installed free. NOTICE OF MOTION Scheme to Reduce Price of Gas The following notice of motion was moved by Mr. E. T. E. Hogg, at the meeting of the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board last evening:— “That, with a view to effecting a reduction in the price of gas. the board ascertain whether the Wellington Gas Company would supply gas to the board in bulk, and if so at what price, tile board remaining owner of and responsible for its own undertaking as at present.” Tlie recent poll to raise a loan of £16,000 bad been defeated by the. council, said Mr. Hogg, who added that, as things stood at present, it would lie found difficult to reduce the price of gas. He therefore proposed to ask the board to consider the question from another angle. SHARK SCARE AT MURITAI Some alarm was caused at Marital yesterday when it was rumoured that sharks had been seen by bathers. Inquiries, however, failed to*substantiate the rumour. Nevertheless. Constable R. D. Squire, stationed at Eastbourne, warned persons on the beach to keep a lookout in case-of danger.
