1935 BRINGS PEACE

Statement by Premier of France PLANS FOR NEW YEAR Fighting Unemployment and Restoring Business By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Paris, January 13. “Peace dawned with the New Year were the first words of M. Flandiu, at a speech at a banquet of the Alliance Republicaine Democratique. He added that the Rome agreements and Loudon conversations only aimed at the consolidation of peace. M. Flandiu, Prime Minister ot France, then outlined the Government’s plans to fight unemployment and restore business. The plans included the adaptation of production to consumption, a reduction in the rate of interest in order to restore credit which would satisfy the Treasury’s needs without depreciating the market price of existing loans, increasing long-term interest. Moreover, it would not necessitate inflation. M. Flandin also promised reform of the magistracy whereby judges would be freed from political influence. The Premier forecast the creation of the post of Inspector-Genera', who would supervise apppointments and promotions. He added: “We shall not weaken in determination to reform. I do not regard myself as a member of a club of rotary Premiers." SCUFFLE IN PARIS Police and Demonstrators Paris, January 13. Ten thousand unemployed hunger marchers, despite the Government’s prohibition of the demonstration, which Communists organised, .attempted to inarch to the Chamber of Deputies. This resulted in a scuffle with the police, in which 30 arrests were made. The police permitted three separate meetings, after which a deputation was allowed to proceed to the Chamber to hand in written demands for bread and work.
