NEW SEASON’S WHEAT Quality Satisfactory The first of the new season’s wheat samples to be sent to the New Zealand XVheat Ileseareh Institute for testing for baking quality arrived last week. The samples, which have come from northward of Waipara, are of a satisfactory quality, and even better than those received in January of last year. ( The first of the samples have come iu about a fortnight sooner than usual, though only a few days earlier than last year. In both cases dry weather hastened on the ripening process. Last season the crops suffered from it dry spoil anil from frost and hail. The present growing season was very wet for a start, and was dry in October and until the middle of November, when a good soaking rain was experienced. Since then the dry weather has created a serious problem, and it is probable that some of the later samples will not be well filled out. The probable yield is still a matter of conjecture, as is the question as to whether there will be a Dominion shortage of wheat this year. The wheat census taken on November 30, 1934. showed a total of 4.025.662 bushels in stock in New Zealand. as against 3,59.1,7<)6 bushels at the corresponding time in the previous year. There are at present ample stocks from last year's harvest, and the only question concerns the yield from the 1935 crop. The New Zealand acreage under wheat this year is 228.600. compared with “9-1.992 last season. The average yield per acre over the last ten years is 32 bushels, and on this basis the present acreage should yield 7,315,200 bushels.
