EXTENSIVE FIRE

Grassland Near Carterton By Telegraph—Press Association. Masterton, January 14. Fairly extensive areas of grasslands in various parts of the district have been swept by fire during the past few weeks, and large bands of volunteers have been engaged in the strenuous task of checking the spread. An area, of about 400 acres, some seven miles from Carterton, were swept to-day, and in spite of the efforts of about 50 men, the flames seriously threatened Carter's Bush, a beautiful area of native bush,. The tire actually reached the scrub at tlie outskirts of tlie bush before being cheeked late in the evening. The danger of the bush catching fire remains imminent and a large party of men is camping out to-night in case of emergency.
