CASH ATHLETIC CLUB

Formation in Wellington Wellington is again to have a club for the promotion of professional athletics. after an interval of three years. Tlie club was formed last evening" by a representative meeting, under the name of the Wellington Cash Cycling, Athletics and Axemen’s Club. It will be affiliated to the New Zealand Cycling, Athletes and Axemen’s Union, which conveyed an offer through Mr. C. E. Church of financial assistance to meet the club’s preliminary expenses. The pronosal was outlined by Mr. Church, who pointed out the lack of facilities for those desiring to compete for cash in Wellington, and the opportunities that could be made use of if the club were formed. Ultimately it was hoped that the club would spread throughout the whole of the Wellington province. He also referred to the possibility of the club attracting overseas athletes to New Zealand, including some returning from the Centenary Games. “During the latter part of my athletic career I was ashamed of the game I belonged to because of its bad control,” said the chairman, Mr. A. A. Nattrass. “Where money is concerned a certain type of rider arises who will ’put in the dirt.’ ” He urged members contemplating the formation of the club to keep it free from anything of this nature. After some discussion took place on the question of the temporary commencement of the club affecting the amateur status of those interested, Mr. M. B. Hunt suggested that it be made, quite clear that this meeting was purely of a preliminary nature, and that a further meeting would be held later. Mr. C. Lamont moved, and Mr. E. J. Davies seconded, that a club be formed. to be known as the Wellington Cash Cycling, Athletic and Axemen’s Club. Lengthy discussion followed concerning the advisability of immediately forming the club, but tlie motion was eventually carried almost unanimously. The following provisional committee was set up: Messrs. C. Lamont, A. West, E. J. Davies, 1. J. Archibald, R. W. Campbell. J. Rvan and M. B. Hunt (secretary). A further meeting will be held on Monday. January 21.
