ODDS LAID ON COURSE
Married Woman Fined £25 By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, January 14. Caught on the Ellerslie racecourse laying “tote” odds during the New Year meeting. Gladys Florence Maekrell, a married woman, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court, on a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker. She pleaded guilty. “My father was very ill. He died next day, and it was to help him that I tried to get a little money.” said accused. She was fined £25 and costs, or one month in prison.
