PIGEON POST STAMPS
Unique New Zealand Edition Sold Dominion Special Service—By Air Mail. Loudon, December 22, “Air Mail” stamps issued in New Zealand long before the days of the first mail-carrying aeroplane were sold by auction in London this week. Titese were stamps used to frank letters carried by pigeons between Auckland and the copper mines on the Great Barrier Islands. It cost sixpence to send a letter from Auckland to the islands, but 1/- for the opposite journey; specimens of both stamps were offered in the London auction rooms. They included stamps printed at. various times between the first issue in IS9S and the supersession of the pigeon post by the present cable 10 years later. The highest bid at the auction was disappointingly low—only £6/10/-. This was paid for a used “flimsy” (complete envelope). “Flimsies’-’ are comparatively rare, and this was the only one offered fOr .sale. Unused pigeon'post stamps were knocked down for considerably lower prices.
