North Island Tournament A. J. GIBBS WINS OPEN Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, January 12. Glorious weather favoured the last few days of the North Island croquet tournament at Wanganui, and the finals were watched by a large, interested gallery. Three titles changed hands —-North Island open championship and the North Island women’s championship, while only one of the holders of the North Island championship doubles was present to defend the title. Mrs. Pitcaithly was in three finals and played excellent croquet throughout the tournament. She was beaten in the open championship by A. J. Gibbs, of Patea. On Friday afternoon, with but one final to play—the open championship—the trophies were presented to the winners by Mrs. A. Crawford, vicepresident of the New Zealand Croquet Council and president of the Wanganui Croquet Council, as follows: — North Island women’s championship (cup presented by Mrs. J. P. Innes) —Mrs. R. Watkins (Hastings). Runner-up, Mrs. Pitcaithly (Hastings). (1934 holder, Mrs. R. Gainbrill. Palmerston North.) North Island doubles championship (cup presented by Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P.) —(Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Gibbs, Patea. Runners-up, Mesdames Gambrill and Pitcaithly. (1934 holders, Mrs. J. W. Lowe and Mr. A. J. Gibbs). Handicap singles.—Section I: Mrs Gambrill,; runner-up, Mrs. Wansbrough (Durie Hill). Section II: C. La Roche (Durie Hill) ; runner-up, Mr. Ogier (Durie Hill). Handicap doubles.—La Roche and Mrs. Petrie (Feilding) ; runners-up, Managb (Taumarunui), and Mrs. Bourgeois. Both playing beautiful croquet, A. J. Gibbs and Mrs. Pitcaithly met in the final of the open championship of the North Island- ou Saturday morning. Gibbs getting in, with a lift shot going from the 3rd hoop, he peeled the partner ball through rover and pegged out, 26— 20. In and out play distinguished the second game, both giving opportunities to the other. Gibbs, however, look command and finished the game, 26 —10. The 1934 holder was Mrs. Kibblewhite, of Hamilton.
