BOWLS TOURNEY

Two More Games of Rinks Championship PLAY ON BUMPY GREENS Collapse of Consistent Performers By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, January 13. The annual tourney conducted by the New Zealand Bowling Association was continued on Saturday. Two further games in the section rounds of the rinks championship were completed, totalling four out of the eight to be staged in the division of the championship. Although a number of contestants had the trying experience of watching many well-delivered woods go astray from their objective through the bumpiness-of some greens, the blame must be placed upon the continued dry spell. Surfaces have suffered materially from the lack of beneficial rains, and have scorched in many instances to the colour of well-bleached hay, having lost the refreshing greenness usually seen in Auckland. The somewhat rough greens had the effect of lowering the form of some consistent performers in the past. This was particularly noticeable in the game between Hutchison (Dunedin) and Bartlett (Awakino), the latter winning 34-24. Bremner (West End, Auckland) provided another instance of a strong rink collapsing. The score read 20 to 13 on the nineteenth head in favour of West End. On the twentyfolirth it read 20 to 24 and on the concluding head Bremner was one down. His opponent, Francis (Balmoral), placed a block-and-back bowl. Bremner swung round the block with a running shot, got the jack but trailed it to the back bowl with a killing head for a replay. Two Eights Running. In the game Pilkington versus Carswell, the former drove and missed the head which resulted in seven for Carswell. Mantell, of Tauranga, scored two eights running against Smith, of Kelburn. Gee, of Te Awamutu, got seven in the game against Steele, of Auckland. Brightlng, of Hataitai, scored six on the eleventh against Harrison, of Auckland. Harrison eventually won by 25 to 23. Duncan Campbell, aS lead for the Auckland rink, was particularly accurate in his drawing. Harrison was 13 to 6, when Brighting drove, making the score 13 to 12. The best jierformance in the competition to this stage is that of Vella (Onehuuga). His total of points on the four games played have given him a margin of 45 points. His highest win was 35 to 12 against Taplin, of Hallyburton Johnston. Little, of Hamilton. has the next best with a margin of 42 points. His highest score was against Johnson, of Ponsonby, 44 to IS. London, of Devonport, follows with a margin of 41 points, his best score being 35 to 15 against Mantell, of Tauranga. ■■■■'< - Thomas, of Wafrere, has a 35-point margin, his highest score being against Sutherland, of Avondale, 30 to 11. Walker, of Mt. Albert, has a 36-point margin; Robertson, of Onehunga, 24 points; Lett, of Park. Masterton, 24 points; Muston, of Carlton. 21 points; Buchan, of Te Aroha, 16 points; Dunstan, of Waihi. 16 points: Carswell, of Auckland. IS points; Harrison, of Aucklarf. 14 points: Jenkin, of Carlton, 19 points. Winners of Four Games. Teams under the above-named skips have all won four games at this stage out of the eight to be played. They have still four to play, but it is almost certain that they can at least win another two games and will qualify for the post-section rounds. The champion rink. G. Dickson, F. Redpatli, H. F. Gibson. H. Wilson, of the Linwood club. Christchurch, lost their last game of the day by the bowling of the St. John’s team, skipped by A. El Stone. Stone’s score was 31 to Wilson’s 23. This loss will not damage the holders’ chance of going forward into the post-section rounds, as six wins will be necessary to qualify for the major stage of the competition. Owing to the number of teams unduly prolonging the 25-head games now played in the rinks competition, the bowling council will consider the advisability of placing a time limit in future, so that the original purpose of the new arrangement will be successful—that of giving contestants a spell for an hour at midday after the gruelling days of the singles and pairs championship. Auckland, January 13, Wellington bowlew at the Dominion tournament are as a whole more than holding their own in the rinks championship, the third and fourth rounds of which were decided yesterday in beautiful summer weather. It has been a wonderful week of hot summer days, without the threat of a break, and fast and true greens and everything to provide idea) conditions for bowlers. Owing to the dry weather, however, some greens are becoming bumpy. The best players from all the prominent clubs in the Dominion have been scattered over city and suburns greens. The tournament opened on Monday with the singles, in which no fewer than 314 players competed. On Wednesday the pairs games were begun, and on Friday the rinks contest. All three competitions will be completed during the coming week. The long spell of fine weather has made the greens very fast, and yesterday they were drawing very wide. As in I lie singles and pairs, there were several surprises in the rinks games. Many of the recognised crack club skips went under, while others just pulled into the next round by a single point. The margin of ecoring varied considerably, and while there were games in which the total points scored were in the thirties, there were others where the totals were considerably greater. The scores of J. _B. London may not come under the heading of sensational, but in the first three rounds of his rink games they were unusual. In bis first game against Mantell his tally was 38, in the second against ITerguson he put 31 on the board, and in the third against Price the marker chalked up 30. making 99 for the three successive games. Another Unusual Score. Another unusual score was recorded in the game between the rinks skipped by C. Little and Johnson. Little’s Hamilton quartet put 44 on the board against their opponents’ 18, the aggregate being 62. During the first three rounds of the links there were 15 games where the total points scored exceeded 50. Mantell (Tauranga) put up n record in the. fourth round (Section C) by scoring eights in two of four rounds he played.. This bis probably never been equalled in the Dominion. There are eight Wellington teams in

the rinks competition, and completion of the fourth round finds the province generally in a strong position. , Three rinks, Smith (Kelburn), Brackenridge (Lyall Bay), and Brighting (Hataitai), each has secured three wins, and unlike some provinces. there is no rink which has not secured a win. Smith faced yesterday’s play in the comfortable position of having two wins to his credit. He went on to add another in the third round, in which he beat Hooper (Epsom) by the somewhat comfortable margin of 31 to 23. He met a strong opponent in Mantell (Ta.iranga) in the afternoon, and had to lower his colours. Yesterday was a bad day for McWhannell (Hataitai), who was defeated twice, although both were well contested. This was unfortunate, as McWhannell eaine on to, the greens yesterday with an unbeaten record for Friday. Brackenridge (Lyall Bay) has been playing a steady, consistent game, losing only one match. Hataitai Bowler’s Play. Brighting (Hataitai) was another Wellington player who faced yesterday’s contests with confidence, for he had been successful in the first two rounds. His first game yesterday was against Harrison (Auckland), and there was very little between the contestants at any stage. In the end the Aucklander prevailed, but only with a margin of three points. Brighting made amends in the afternoon, when he gained a comfortable victory over Mattar (Foxton), 36-22. Of the others, Naylor (Thorndon) has not played with the best of luck, and he has gone down in three of his four games. The positions of the Wellington players at the end of four rounds are as follow: — Smith (Kelburn), three wins; MeWhannell (Hataitai), two wins; Brackenridge (Lyall Bay), three wins; Brighting (Hataitai), three wins; Hale (Island Bay), two wins; Parkhouse (Wellington), two wins; Naylor (Thorndon), one win; Gilbert (Karori), two wins with three rinks. With only one loss, Wellington is therefore in a sound position. Thirteen rinks have won all four games played, and practically all those securing this success represent clubs in the Auckland province.
