NEW CATHOLIC SCHOOL
1 Blessed by Archbishop By Telegraph.—Press -Association. Westport, January 13. Archbishop O'Shea, making his first official appearance in public as Metropolitan for New Zealand, in succession to the late Archbishop Redwood, opened mid blessed the new Catholic School in Westport this afternoon, in Hie presence of a large assemblage. Tlie Archbishop was escorted from the Presbytery lo the new school by Hie Children of Mary, members of Hie Hibernian Society, and the school children. In the course of his address the Arclibishop expressed the view that secular schools should be subsidised. The speakers included Father Phelan, parish priest, who mentioned that this was the second’ Catholic school, opened in Westport, the cost of the present building, which hail six rooms and was one of tlie most up-to-date in tlie Dominion. being £2500 It was being opened almost free of debt. Mention was made by one of rhe speakers that Father Phelan bad h-m--self contributed £1(X)0 Other speakers were the Mavor. Mr .1 Kilkennv. Mr. P. C. Webb, M.P.. Hon W II Mclntyre.
