TO INDUCE RAINFALL
Aeroplane Drops Sand on Clouds Dominion Special Service. Alasterton, January 12. Amrious experiments to make artificial rainfalls have been carried out in some countries, notably in America, where the idea has often been attended with success. One experiment tried is to drop powdered ice or sand from aeroplanes over heavy rain clouds, the idea being to reduce the temperature and thus cause a fall of rain. This afternoon, Air. J. 11. Preston, ground engineer to the AVairarapa and Ruahine Aero Club, ascended in the club’s Sloth aeroplane, ZK —AC.D, and dropped sand over heavy and ominouslooking clouds which were threatening the district. However, as far as can be ascertained, Mr. Preston’s efforts to induce rain were not crowned with a great deal of success, although rain is reported to have fallen round the AVaingawa area, and at the western and southern sides of the town.
