EFFECT ON SHIPPING
Restrictions on Meat Exports
AUSTRALIAN POSITION
Many Space Bookings Cancelled By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received January 11. 11.30 p.m.) Sydney. January 11. The serious effect of beef, mutton and lamb export restrictions upon shipping was emphasised by the Overseas Shipping Representatives’ Association to-day. It was stated that within 21 hours bookings of more than 300,000 carcases of mutton and lamb had been cancelled. Already 12 vessels were affected at Sydney and 14 at Melbourne, where the loss of freight is estimated at £60.000 with little hope of filling tlie cancelled space with other cargo. Shipowners complain bitterly that they wore not consulted about the restrictions. They further state that they lost heavily last year when the wool sales were suddenly cancelled and 150,000 bales -withdrawn. Several freight reductions had also been made in recent months entirely in the interest of the Australian export trade.
