MAY LAST LONG TIME
Strike on Goldfields
Perth, January 10.
After a union meeting at Kalgoorlie, the secretary handed to the Chamber of Mines a letter stating that the men would only work 44 hours a week.
This will close the door to negotiations, and the union leaders are now preparing for a protracted stoppage.
A Kalgoorlie message on January 7 stated that 6000 miners were on strike from all mines on the Golden Mile at Boulder. The dispute was due to a refusal by the men to agree to the 88-hour fortnight, consisting of 40 hours spread over five days and 48 hours in the following week which is provided under the new award. The men are demanding a continuation of the former 44-hour week.
