AUSTRALIA’S MEAT

The difference between Australia and the United Kingdom in the matter of meat is conforming to the bodyline precedent. Dr. Earle Page announces from Brisbane that the British Government lias agreed to “accept” the Australian “offer,” and will not now impose the proposed restriction on Australian meat. Dr. Page is Minister of Commerce; and while he is in Brisbane the Department of Commerce in Melbourne is advising exporters that further permits for the shipment of mutton and lamb to arrive in the United Kingdom before the end of March will not be issued. No restriction has so far been placed on the export of beef, “as the suggested quota has not yet been approached.” If one were an Englishman, it will be recalled, lie called Larwood a fast leg bowler; good Australians, on the other hand, called him a bodylinc bowler. But by whatever name called, Larwood took wickets. ’Similarly, it seems, meat quotas are in operation—and it docs not much matter, in principle, whether they have been based on the English or on the Australian proposals.
