PLAY IN FINAL ROUNDS Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, January 10. The weather was excellent for play in the North Island croquet championships at Wanganui to-day. Several finals and semi-finals were decided. Results are as follow: — WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP. Second Life. Semi-final: Mrs. Margison (Hamilton) beat Mrs. Pitcaithly (Hastings), 26-11. Final: Mrs. Watkins (Hastings) beat Mrs. Margison. 26-8. , First Life.

Final: Mrs. Pitcaithly beat Mrs. Anstis (Palmerston North), 26-8. A .surprise win in the semi-final of the second life in the women’s championship was that of Mrs Margison, a 2i player, by 27-7, over Mrs. Pitcaithly, who is a scratch player. Playing good croquet and making all-round breaks, she left Mrs. Pitcaithly little chance to score. Mrs. Margison then met Mrs. Watkins, who played perfect croquet, hitting in with the first ball. Mrs. Watkins carried her clip to the third return, where she failed. Mrs. Margison then hit in, and after making five points failed. Mrs. Watkins immediately hit in and macfe an all-round break to peg. Mrs. Margison then made three points and failed, allowing Mrs. Watkins to finish the name, 26-8. Mrs. Pitcaithly in her game against Mrs. Anstis in the final of the first life played fine croquet, giving her opponent little chance to score. Handicap Games. In the handicap singles semi-final Mrs. Gambrill ( —J) beat Mrs. Watkins ( —2), 26-23; and in the final she beat Mrs. Wansbrough (3), 26-19. The semi-final of the handicap singles provided spectacular croquet. Again playing well, Mrs. Watkins soon nad her clips on the penultimate hoop and the peg. Mrs. Gambrill used a half-bisque and set out the balls to advantage, from which she made a break. With good tactics and careful play Mrs. Gambrill succeeded in reaching the peg, using her bisque to peg out and finishing the game 26-23. In the final of the handicap singles Mrs. Gambrill proved too strong a player for her opponent, to whom she had to concede 3} bisques. Mrs. Gambrill’s roquets and mastery of position were features.
