Adverse Effect on Hawke’s Bay Fleeces

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hastings, January 10. A fair amount of wool is to be offered at the second sale this season to be held at Napier, opening on Saturday. It shows evidence of having been shorn wet, with the result that the colour has been affected and the tips perished. Some buyers express the opinion that el ovex. burr is showing more in Hawke’s Bay wool each year. “Its source is of much annoyance to us; farmers may fatten their sheep on clover, but it is seriously affecting their wool,” said one buyer. Another buyer said : “It is the worst thing we have to contend with. Burr is getting worse every year in Hawke’s Bay wool, and is now a real menace.” According to some leading buyers, the fat lamb industry is having an adverse effect on the quality of many clips, for which they have coined th'e name of fat lamb clips. “Judging from the number of clips,” said one buyer, “it seems farmers are not growing sheep for wool, which is now becoming only a sideline and a byproduct.” Commenting on the classing, another said: “Much nice wool has been spoilt by poor classing. It would be an advantage to farmers if they came into the store and saw their wool when it is opened up.
