Winners of Sydney Trophy CONFLICT OF RULES Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, January 9. Animated discussion took place at a meeting of the executive of the Wanganui Rowing Association last night as to the status of three members of the Union club. Wanganui, R. Gould, A. V. Shepard and M. Luxford, who competed in Australia recently. Last year these men rowed in maiden classes, and were to have competed as juniors this year. As a result of their being members of the crew to win the Kerr Cup in Sydney, it has been held by the New Zealand Rowing Association that they are now senior members, according to rule 80. The Union club, however, points out that under rule 40. “the classification of members shall not be affected by competing in inter-club races and interprovincial races, providing there is no money prize.’’ It was decided to write to the N.Z.A.R.A.. stating that as the rules were contradictory, and as the race for the Kerr Cup was an invitation event, the executive wits of the opinion that the oarsmen concerned were not senior members. SPARK CAUSES FIRE Area of Wheat Destroyed Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North. January 9. A Marton farmer, Mr. W. H. Emmerson, had the misfortune to lose twelve acres of wheat and several paddocks of grass as the result Of a fire caused by a spark yesterday. Mi\ Emmerson was driving a reaper and binder when sparks from the engine set tire to the dry wheat stalks. He partially extinguished the blaze, but the fire had spread in Other places. His machine caught fire while he was endeavouring to move it away, and although his hands were burnt ne managed to get the machine to the gate, by which time the whole paddock was in flames. AMATEUR SWIMMING Masterton Club’s Meeting Masterton, January 9. Members of the Masterton Amateur Swimming and Life Saving Club conducted their weekly evening meeting in the Dixon Street baths last evening, when the following aggregate prizes won during the month of December were presented to the successful swimmers by Mr. A. 11. The final results of the Loudon judging of Wairarapa and East Coast show lambs is as follows: — i Pen No. 680, It. R. Tilson (first at Wellington), 1; Pen No. 701, Jack Jury (unplaced at show or Wellington), 2; Pen N 0.670, H. Morison (unplaced at show or Wellington), 3. The prize for the best individual lamb in any pen other than in the winning pen was awarded to the McKenzie Estate, Featherston, the winning lamb coming from Pen No. 690. FIRE AT WAITARERE ' Levin, January 9. A tire occurred at Waitarere beach yesterday. when the kitchen of the residence owned and occupied by Mr. S. Mudgway was gutted. The cause of the outbreak was apparently the igniting of the fumes from a petrol stove by a fire in the same room. As at most beaches, there were no fire-fighting appliances. Neighbours, however, soon succeeded in getting under control the flames, which were prevented from spreading by the asbestos fibre structure of the walls. Casey, of the Horowhenua Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club, received to-day a grant of £lO from the Agricultural Department for the fostering of inslructionnl work of the district club. This club has been in existence for some four years, and during that time much progress iq ealf-reariug and feeding has been made.
