FATAL SEIZURE

Hot Springs ‘ Drowning

Matamata, January 8.

The first drowning fatality at the Okauia hot springs baths, near Matamata, occurred yesterday morning, when Roy Albert Twyman, aged 19, son of Mr. John Twyman, of Lichfield, Putaruru, and an employee of Mrs. J. Mapp, of Walton, had a fatal seizure in the baths.

An inquest was held this evening before Mr A. J. Tong, coroner, when Arthur Craven and John Craven, students, of Wellington, stated that deceased sank after sliding down a chute. They endeavoured to rescue him, but bis weight was too great. The bathkeeper, Mr. F. Underwood, eventually recovered the body with a rod arid hook after about 10 minutes’ work. Medical evidence showed that death was due to drowning, presumably after a fainting attack or heart seizure.

The coroner returned a verdict that deceased was accidentally drowned following a seizure and added a rider rhat in his opinion more facilities for life-saving should be provided at the baths.
