LAWN TENNIS
Miss Nicholls Wins Three Events MANAWATU TOURNEY Men’s Singles to Coombe Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, January 9. The Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association’s championships were finalised this afternoon, when Miss Dulcie Nicholls, Wellingtoji, won her three events, and Coombe, also of Wellington, annexed the men’s singles title. The men’s doubles went to Wanganui, Lampe and Cox revenging themselves against Coombe and Penrco, who won at Wanganui. Playing conditions were again marred by a troublesome wind. Otherwise players had nothing to complain about, and although some contestants had to playthree and four matches with but a few minutes’ respite, this was unavoidable. The best match of the day' was the women's singles final between Miss Nicholls and Miss D. Howe. The men’s singles final failed to compare with the standard usually attained at Palmerston North in this event, but the standard of tennis generally was more than"fair. Two handicap events, the men’s doubles and the mixed doubles, have not yet been concluded, but will be finalised to-morrow morning. Miss Nichblls’s Win. Miss Nicholls reversed the recent decision in the Wellington championships by defeating Miss Howe this afternoon iii straight sets. She scored frequently with her strong service, and although the match was more even than the score indicates, Miss Nicholls left no doubt as to her decided superiority over Miss Howe. Miss Nicholls seldom ventured away from the baseline, and Miss Howe was content to exchange long length drives, but was worried into errors by her opponent’s chopped drives. Miss Nicholls made Miss Howe use her backhand and run from one side of the court to the other to return the ball, but had herself to do her share of chasing well-judged drives along the sidelines. Miss Nicholls, however, with variation in pace and length on her drives, kept Miss iHowe on the defensive. Men’s Final. The men’s singles final between Coombe and Charters failed to reach the standard expected, and although there were many good shots by both finalists, there were also strokes that were very much below par. Coombe commenced shakily, but Charters was little better, and Coombe, after losing the first game ran to a 5-3 lead, and clinched the set after missing three set points off Cliarters’s service. Coombe had to concede the first three games in the second set to Charters, who then fell into a patch of errors, and trailed 3-4. Charters evened at 4-all. but Coombe out-generalled him and won the match with two beautiful aces.
Lampe and Cox were too good a combination for Coombe _ and Pearce, who did not play as well in the final as they did in earlier rounds. Lampe and C»x made some brilliant smashes, and found weaknesses in the positional play of their opponents. The match was keenly contested all through, but there was little doubt as to the final outcome after the first set had been decided. Local Pair Outclassed. Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Beatiie were no match for Misses Nicholls and Howe in the final of the women’s doubles, and if. was unfortunate that the Manawatu pair were unable to reproduce the form which won them the right to meet the other semi-finalists.
Miss Nicholls was at the top of her form in the final of the mixed doubles, with Charters, against Coombe and Miss Howe, and her partner atyo played better than he was able to in his other matches. This match was marked by some good rallies and excellent serving by Miss Nicholls. Detailed results are as follow: — Championship Events MiEIN’S SU'NODEIS. Fourth round: Coombe beat Graham, 6-1, 6-0.
