SERIOUS GRASS FIRES
Several Thousand Acres Burnt PLANTATIONS DAMAGED By Telegraph—Press Association. Ashburton, January 9. • A fire in the slaronau district yesterday afternoon, fanned by a - northwesterly wind, swept several thousand acres of grassland as well as fences and plantations. Several homesteads were saved only by the strenuous efforts of / hundreds "of farmers and others. The fire travelled over seven miles on a front in places of several miles. Mr. S. IL Lili lost 76 acres of oats in stock, Mr. J. Bell three stacks of oaten sheaves, and Mr. A. J. Breakwell 40 acres of young trees. The weather has been unusually hot during the last two months and grass fires constitute a menace.

Blenheim, January 9.
A grass fire which started in a strong wind on Mr. Robert Forsyth’s property at Riverlands yesterday destroyed ten slacks containing 100 tons of oaten sheaves and 70 tons of hay. It swept 100 acres of grasslands and stubble, and burnt a mile of fencing, several head of sheep and 150 bushels of threshed barley. The damage exceeds £5OO and is not covered by insurance.
