Palmerston North, January 8.
An Otaki farmer, Joseph Cartner, aged 55, was drowned in the Otaki River this morning. It appears he was working pigs across a cable when he stepped into a hole in the riverbed ami was swept away and drowned.
A large party, under Constable Satherley, of Otuki, is engaged in searching for the body, but ns the river is In flood and the water is discoloured, the search has so far not been successful. Mr. Cartner was accompanied by Mr. George Archer, who sent for assistance.
