Melbourne Bakers’ Step Melbourne, January 7. Following the enforcement of the Hour tax. the price of bread has been increased by a half-penny to 41d a 21b. loaf. A Sydney message published yesterday stated that, defying the State Government. master bakers there decided to increase the price of bread over the counter from 4Jd. a loaf to 4sd. from yesterday, which meant that most people would pay tivepenee. The increase is alleged to be due to the flour tax. which came into operation yesterday. A cable dated January 3 stated that the New South Wales Premier, Mr. B. S. Stevens, stated that if the master bakers insisted on increasing the. price of bread when the flour tax came into operation, the State Government would fix the price by proclamation. Cabinet has given the Premier power to take any action lie thinks necessary.
