AVOIDING NAVAL RACE

Lloyd George’s Solution

JAPAN’S PARITY DEMAND

London, January 6.

Mr. Lloyd George, in an article in the “Sunday Pictorial/’ says:—■ “Japan’s determination to win naval parity was unalterably fixed before her delegates left for England. America’s opposition to the Japanese claim was equally deep-rooted. “We have ceased to associate firmness and clarity with British foreign policy, but the public assumed that the Government would align itself with America In resisting Japauee policy. There will be no agreement until the Powers completely change their policy in handling Pacific questions. “Japan means to attain parity in fact, and would prefer its attainment by a reduction of its rivals' strength. If Britain and America do not agree, Japan will not hesitate to build to the limit of equality. Britain and America should agree on a common policy in the Pacific; thus avoiding a building race which would stampede the nations toward catastrophe.” MOVE TO IMPOSE BAN Foreign Service Personnel LANDINGS AT SINGAPORE Singapore, January 6.

Subject to legislative approval, in future no foreign service personnel from warships or transports will be allowed to land here without permission of the local Government.
