Sir Maurice Hankey, Secretary to the Committee o£ Imperial Defence, interviewed by the “News-Chronicle” on his return from his Empire tour, denied that he had proposed the reintroduction of compulsory training in Australia, or a 10 years’ period of defence reorganisation. The political correspondent of the “Sunday Express” affirms that Sir Maurice Hankey submitted to the Do. minions a scheme of Imperial defence already worked out and discussed the same in the course of his visit. The scheme proposes that component parts of the Empire should contribute finance, personnel and equipment. The “Weekly Dispatch" says that Sir Maurice Hankey will recommend strong air armaments throughout rhe Empire, the Dominions contributing to the cost. FIGHTING PLANES' Australia’s Intention (Received January 7, 10.10 p.m.) Melbourne, January 7. It is reported' that 36 new Demon Hawker fighting aeroplanes are being ordered almost immediately for the Australian Air Force, in addition to the IS Demons which arrive from England next month.

A similar number of fighting machines will bo ordered next year, but the type has not yet been determined.
