POLISH MINE STRIKE
Men Come to Surface
(Received January 7, 7.30 p.m.)
Warsaw, January 7.
The underground mine strike has been abandoned. Over 40 of the 120 miners remained underground until an assurance of sympathetic investigation was promised. The authorities condemned the mine as unsafe and Insanitary.
A cable dated January 2 stated that the Warsaw correspondent o£ “The Times” reported that 80 coalminers in the Baskra mine in Upper Silesia refused to come to the surface. They had been seven days 250 ft. below, sitting in the mud with one lamp and little food. Four brought a sick comrade to the surtace. They were prevented from returning. It had been suggested that the au- ' thorities should flood the mine if the men did not come to light by a specified time. The men allege thaj. money due to them was unpaid when work was suspended.
