CHILLED BEEF
Experimental Shipments From Australia
LANDED IN GOOD ORDER A member of the Queensland Meat Export Board, Mr. G. J. C. Tomlin, is a through passenger from San Francisco to Sydney by the Maunganui, which arrived at Wellington yesterday. Mr. Tomlin has been to England to see how Australian chilled beef is landed there. <-
Experimental shipments 'of chilled beef had been made in co-operation with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and to date they showed that jt was possible to land beef free of mold and visible bacteriological infection, said Mr. Tomlin. Furtheir attention would now be given to some smaller details; such as the bloom (appearance) of the meat. A very small proportion of beef was as yet being sent by this means, but there was no reason why beef sent from Australia frozen should not ultimately be sent chilled.
Australian meat was quite popular in England, and everywhere he went, Mr. Tomlin said, it was accepted and highly commended. He preferred not to discuss ttio quota situation.
