TO-DAY’S NATURE NOTE
4 Cannibalistic Fishes It is interesting to watch a dog herding sheep iuto a pen, but to see fish herding other fish into an enclosure is something that is not very often seen. I was watching some fish in what is known as Fisherman’s Creek, Island Bay. There were three large fish, very like kawhai, and they were driving a small sh'oal of herrings in front of them, until they came io a shallow bay, into which they drove the herrings, and then they arranged themselves at the entrance to prevent their captives getting out. The big fish then took it in turns to go into the bay to have a feed. When the supply of herrings was finished, they went off and got another small shoal. How long this went on I do not know, as the tide was coming in and I had to leave the scene of this amazing sight.—H.W.B. (Wellington).
