Universal Pictures’ 1935
Programme
During 1935 Universal Pictures intend to make 36 feature pictures, 13 Lowell Thomas travelogues, 13 issues of “Stranger Than Fiction,” and 26 cartoons, including six “Cartune Classics” in colour. This information is contained in a cable received from Mr. Carl Laemmle by Mr. C. F. Eskell. Among the major productions will be Fanny Hurst’s “Imitation of Life,” starring Claudette Colbert and Warren William; two of Charles Dickens’s works, “Great Expectations” nnd “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”; Edna Ferber’s “Show Boat’’; William Anthony McGuire and Billie Burke’s “The Great Ziegfeld”; Blaise Cehdrar’s “Sutton’s Gold”; C. Lloyd-Douglass’s “Magnificent Obsession” ; Charles G. Norris’s "Zest” ; Thorne Smith’s “Night Life of the Gods” ; Franz Molnar’s “The Good Fairy” ; Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” ; Max Marcin’s “Cheating Cheaters.” The players cast to appear in Universal Pictures are:—-Margaret Sullavan, Claudette Colbert. William Powell, Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Claude Rains (“The Invisible Man”), Frank Lawton, Ralph Forbes, Esther Ralston, Douglass Montgomery, Mary Carlisle, Frank Morgan,' Lois Wilson, Colin Clive, June Knight, Roger Pryor, Andy Devine, Alice White, William Faversham, Fay Wray, Edmund Lowe, Paul Lukas, Gloria Stuart, Jane Wyatt, Phillips Holmes, Alan Hale, Warren William,, Robert Warwrick, Herbert Marshall, Billie Burke, HeaTber Angell, Henry Armetta, Binnie Barnes, Henry Hull, Francis L. Sullivan, Florence Reed, Wesley Barry, Zasu Pitts, Slim Summerville, Onslow Stevens, Leila Hyams and Russ Brown. Valuable literary material for production by Universal includes;—Margaret Ayre Barnes, “Within This Present”; Jean Bart’s “The Mau Who Reclaimed His Head” ; Marcel Pagnon’s “Fanny” ; Preston Sturges's “A Cup of Coffee”; Edith Wharton’s “Strange Wives”; Damon Runyon’s “Princess O'Hara” ; Octavos Roy Cohen’s “Transcient Lady”; Ward Moorehouse’s “It Happened in New York”; John L. Bladerston’s “The Bride of Frankenstein.”
Among the directors are Stuart Walker, Lowell Sherman, John M. Stahl, William Wyler (Margaret Sullavan’s husband), Howard Hawkes, James Whale, Fid. Ludwig, Preston Sturges. Eddie Buz«ell, Murray Roth, Edward Sloman, Kurt Newman, Richard Thorpe, and Karl Freund.
During the season of 1935, Universal’s representation throughout the Dominion will embrace Williamson Pictures Corporation—Regent, Wellington; FullerHayward Theatre Corporation, Ashburton, Oamaru, Waimate, Greymouth circuit, Taihape, Feilding, Frankton Junction.
