OBITUARY
Mr. Ivor Evans After being in ill-health for nearly two years, Mr. Ivor Evans, managing director for Australia of Briscoe and Co., Ltd., died on New Year's Day, aged 66. ’ Previous to 1908 he was a resident of New Zealand and became well known in the commercial community of the Dominion. Born in Ballarat, the late Mr. Evans had his early commercial training in Melbourne, but in 1899 be was sent to Dunedin as local manager for Briscoe and Company. After 12 months in this position he was appointed Auckland manager for the company, and he remained there until 1908. He was elected vice-president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce in 1906. Transferred to Melbourne In 1908 to become Melbourne manager of the firm, and was appointed managing director for Australia in 1918. Until his illness the late Mr. Evans was always a keen sportsman, being particularly interested in cricket, tennis and golf. Ho is survived by his wife and one son, who live in Melbourne Mrs. John Gebbie The death is reported in a Press Association message from Christchurch of Mrs. John Gebbie, of Sumner, at the age of 93. She was in Canterbury before the arrival of the first four ships. Her father was- Mr. Moses Cryer, who first arrived at Lyttelton iu 1549. Mrs. Gebbie was then six years of age. He was engaged in road making and later look over a large holding at Rakaia. When 23 years of age, she married the son of the man who christened Gehbie’s Pass. The ceremony was performed by Bishop Selwyn. Mr. E. Washbourne The death has occurred of Mr. Edward Washbourne, aged 92, of Innes Road. Christchurch, states a Press Association message. He was a Christchurch pioneer, and arrived with his parents in 185(1. He first farmed at Leeston and later at Sedgemere, and was a life member of the Canterbury A. and P. Association and a foundation shareholder of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association. Mr. F. W. Ruddenklau The death has occurred of Mr. Frederick William Ruddenklau, aged 66. a prominent landowner in the Methven and Oust districts, states an Ashburton Press Association message. He was chairman of the Mount Hutt Road Board, Methven, since 1927. and a director of the New Zealand Co-operative of Canterbury. He leaves a widow, four adult sons, and two daughters. Mr. John Rowe The death hits occurred of Mr. John Rowe, aged 80, a president of the Auckland Trotting Club for 30 years and the New Zealand Trotting Conference for 12 years, states a Press Association message from Auckland. He was a member of the Auckland Power Board and a former member of the hospital board, also an ex-Mayor of Onehnnga.
