Damage to Wooden Building
GOOD WORK BY BRIGADE
Fire which broke out shortly before 10 o’clock last night caused damage to the Foresters’ Arms Hotel, Ghuznee Street, Wellington. The establishment is one of the early hotels of the city, and is a two-story wooden structure of IS rooms. Constable G. E. Phillips, on duty in the vicinity, noticed the fire and called the Central Fire Brigade at 9.5 S p.m. Three engines were promptly on the scene. The lire had started in a linen cupboard in a room upstairs. A good deal of smoke issued from the building and a crowd assembled. , Good work by the firemen confined the flames to the one room and the roof above it. Minor damage by water was done in adjoining rooms. A quantity of linen was destroyed. The licensee, Mr. R. MeMullian, and members of his family were having supper on the ground floor and were unaware of the outbreak until acquainted of it by Constable Phillips. BENZINE FUMES, IGNITE Clothes Cleaning Accident A fire occurred in Willis Street on Saturday through a man washing trousers with benzine in a tub close to a copper under which there were' the hot embers of a fire. The inflammable vapour suddenly burst into a sheet at flame, setting fire to the walls aud roof. The brigade found one wall and the roof of the washhouse at the rear of the premises at 225 Hillis Street in a blaze, but a few minutes’ application of a foam-extinguisher sufficed to quell the flames. The man. Mr. Frederick B. Drury, suffered severe burns to his arms, which bad to b„ dressed with oil. Ills shirt also had caught fire, but he bad been able to extinguish it. The house is occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Muldoon and owned by Mr. Nausbaum. Grass Fire at Lyall Bay The fire brigade was called out on Saturday and again on Sunday morning to grass fires near the foreshore at Lyall Bay. in the neighbourhood of Hungerford Road. A quantify of grass was burned, but no serious damage was done.
