Sydney, January 6.

Defying the State Government, master bakers here decided to increase the price of bread over the counter from Aid. a loaf to 4tJd. from to-morrow, which means that most people will pav fivepence.

The increase is alleged to be due o the flour tax. which operates to-mor-row.

A cable dated January 3 stated that the Premier, Mr. B. S. Stevens, stated that if the master bakers insisted ou increasing the price of bread when the flour tax came into operation, the State Government would fix the price by proclamation.

Cabinet has given the Premier power to take any action he thinks necessary.
