> Waikare on a Rock (From “The Dominion,” January 5, 1910.)

The Union Steamship Company received word last evening that the s.s. AVaikare had struck a rock in Dusky Sound at noon. The vessel is reported to be 'badly damaged, and the engineroom and stokehold full to the water level. Tlie vessel was beached on Stop Island, and the passengers and crew landed on the beach of the mainland. The AA’aikare, xvhieh was on. her second excursion to the Sounds this summer, had 150 passengers on board.

Greater things were expected of the motor .postal cars, which have 'been in use here for some months, than have been realised. Mr. Robertson, secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, now holds that until these vehicles are more reliable, it is not advisable to change from the old system. As far as he could learn on his recent trip, such cars were successful in places like London, where’the roads’ are asphalted, where there are few hills, and where spare parts and repairs are instantly available. Frequent breakdowns have rendered the services in AVellington very unsatisfactory. Mr. Robertson has therefore recommended that there be no further experimenting at present, and that the cars now in the possession of the department be disposed of. The Zionist Congress, now sitting at Hamburg, unanimously decided to establish a co-operative settlement in Palestine. The sum of £BOOO was voted for preliminary operations. iiiiiiiiiiii
