LALLA QUEX WINS

Stratford Final Day

MILADI SHOWS RIGHT FORM

Good Totalisator Recovery

Dominion , Special Service.

Stratford, January 5. The second day of the Stratford Racing Club’s New Year meeting, postponed from Wednesday on account of rain, was held on Saturday under ideal conditions, the weather being fine and warm. . For what was virtually an “off” day, the attendance was exceptionally good. The totalisator turnover for. the day surprised even the most optimistic. Mr. D. J. Guiney again did good work at the starting barrier. The track was In first-class order, in fact, even prior to the rain on New Year’s Day the going was excellent, and the condition of the course and its appointments reflected great credit on the custodian, Mr. R. Lloyd, and his assistant, Mr, A. Ste.wart. The going on Saturday was a trifle soft in patches. The betting was always brisk, and showed a fine recovery on the first day, when the turnover was crippled by the weather. For the day the investments were £14,270, as against £13,014/10/-on (he final day last year. For the meeting the investments totalled £28,646/10/compared with £29,015 for 1934, a decrease of £368/10/. The new barometer, worked by Messrs. Hayley and Saggers, of the Wellington Racing Club’s Tventham staff, at this meeting and also at the Taranaki meeting. proved a valuable aid to investors, and was an undoubted success. Surprise in Hurdles. St. Ames was actual favourite for the Makuri Hurdles, but there. was strong support also for Emancipation, Ythan, and Tareha. The tapes rose to an excellent start, Bear Star going out to lead over the initial fence from Gowanlea. St. Ames, Ythan, and Tareha. There was no alteration of positions until five furlongs from home, where Silver Division, Tareha, Ythan, and Gowanlea all closed on Beau Star. -At the last fence Silver Division had a slight advantage, and. hard ridden, ran on well to beat Ythan by three-parts of a length, with Gowanlea, Emancipation, and Tareha all close up. Silver Division has a bad string-halt, but it did not prevent his putting up a good performance; Ythan again ran a fine race,'and Gowanlea surprised with a close third. Emancipation finished well, but faulty jumping kept Tareha from gaining place money. z Favourite Stops Quickly. Ridden by W. Broughton, bast Acte was installed a decided favourite for the Cardiff Stakes, and beginning very smartly, he soon opened up a big lead over Zionist, Huskie, and Harbour Bridge. The last-named followed Fast Acre into the Straight, but Huskie then came fast and went on to beat Fast Acre by two lengths, with Zionist a moderate third, just in front of Red Sand. f . The winner appreciated the soil track, and is useful. Fast Acre runs a fast hve furlongs, but as yet does not run on. Fresh Horse Wins. Fersen, Lalla Quex and Korero a'l came in for good support for the Malone Memorial. Fersen caught the tapes ii Lis mouth and lost some ground. Gout Gleam immediately ran tu the front, and passing the stand had ns his closest attendants Musquil and Bugle Call. The cider up the back straight was Gold Gleam, closely followed by Bugle Cali and Musquil together and Lalla Quex. The same order was maintained into the straight, but with a furlong to go the field closed up, and in a hard struggle Lalla Quex did best to beat Korero by half a length, with Fersen a length further off just in front of Bugle Call. While Lalla Quex went a good race in the recently run Christmas Handicap at New Plymouth, her form to-day was much better. Korero ran an honest race, but -Fersen, although looking a much-im-proved gelding, did net finish quite sj well after his early bad luck. All the same he is a promising sort. Miladi’s Real Form. Merry Way carried a few tickets more in the Toko Handicap than did Diagano; ’.he Miladi-Revision bracket was also well backed. Moatoa soon got to the front, and up the back was closely followed by Merry 'Way, Miladi and Revision. With half the journey covered Merry Way headed Moatoa, and led into the straight, with Revision and Miladi close ly following.’ A hundred yards from the post Merry Way looked a certain winner, but Miladi put in a great effort to heal Merry Way by half a neck, with Revision ;i close third and Moatoa fourth. Miladi pulled up slightly lame on the opening day, and it was only decided on at the eleventh hour to run her. so her performance was a good one. She again pulled up lame. Merry Way had every chance. Diagano was a complete disappointment, and let down badly an army of backers.’ A Game Colt. Joy Box, and Collodion in a lesser degree, gave trouble at the barrier in the Electric Juvenile, and eventually Joy Box refused to go away, but the rest of the' field moved off in a good line. The brilliant Fast Acre set a torrid pace from Collodion, Silver Wings and Lowenberg, and so they ran into the straight. Once in line for the judge, Collodion passed Fast Acre, but Lowenberg immediately- challenged, and in a keen rtruggle Lowenberg just beat Collodion. Fast Acre weakened into third and Zionist was a moderate fourth. As previously stated, Lowenberg ie a promising youngster. He displayed outstanding courage to win to-day. ColFdion carried his big weight well and only went under in the last few feet. St. Clara Improves. In the Hack Plate, St. Clara took charge, and .passing the stands was closely followed by Silk Sox, Korero and Dark Marble. Racing to the back straight Dark Marble took second place bellin'! St. Clara, with Silk Sox. Korero and Tahurangi in the order named. St. Clara had a useful lead entering the straight, and then drew right away to win by several lengths from Dark Marble, who just beat Korero and Tutor (dead heat) by a head. The winner is a good, honest mare, from that once useful performer. Cleasanta. She outclassed the opposition to-day. Dark Manble ran quite a good race, but Silk ’Sox and Tahurangi ran below form. Glenvane in Form. The meeting concluded with the County Hack, which drew only five runners. When the tapes rose Windsoreen began very fast and opened up a six lengths’ lead in the first couple of furlongs. She

was followed to the straight by Glenvane, All Spirit and Chief Marionette. Once in line for the winning post, Glenvane assumed control, and ran home a comfortable winner from Chief Marionette. Windsoreen was a poor third, and All Spirit fourth. The winner revealed his form, which, earlier in his career, promised something out of the ordinary. He has not done much racing for some time. Chief Marionette, penalised 51b. for her win, ran an honest race, but the winner held her comfortably. All Spirit’s form is not as good, ns he has shown in the past.
