‘EXCELLENT PROSPECT’

Duke of Kent as Australia’s Next Governor-General REPORT FROM LONDON By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, January 3. The Australian Press Association’s representative says that the report tliaft Mr. J. A. Lyons, Federal Prime Minister, will ask his Majesty to appoint the Duke of Kent as GovernorGeneral, is regarded in responsible quarters as standing a better chance of fulfilment than any previous movement to secure a member of the Royal Family as Governor-General of Australia. Though there is no precedent for the King’s son acting vice regally in the Dominions, it is considered that the atmosphere for such an appointment is now more favourable in view of the Duke ,of Gloucester’s successful tour. The “Sun-Herald” Agency’s representative says that, although finality is unlikely pending Mr. Lyons’s visit to London, there seems an excellent prospect of the Duke of Kent being Australia's next Governor-General. The Duke of Kent’s marriage has enhanced the possibility of such a mission because it is felt that the position will essentially require a married son. Lyons, declined to comment upon the report that a request liad been made for the appointment of the Duke of Kent as next Governor-General of Australia. Inquiries in official circles elicited the information that diplomatic “feelers” had been extended from Australia' on the subject, but special circumstances render, it impossible to expect any official statement on behalf of the Commonwealth.
