BROMWICH BEATS KIRBY
Australian Tennis Titles CRAWFORD IMPRESSES (Received January 4, 9.35 p.m.) Melbourne, January 4. In his first singles appearance at the Australian tenuis championships, Crawford, in his match against Temple, showed that he is in good form. He hit all his strokes strongly and with the utmost confidence. . Miss Bljc-k scored one of the greatest victories in her career in a thrilling three-set battle against Mrs. Molesworth, second ranked woman player in Australia. Miss Blick six times held match point before she could clinch victory. Both Englishwomen, Miss Round and Miss Deanman, were in good form and had no difficulty in winning. Turnbull was not impressive and was fully extended by Grinstead, the brilliant Queensland player, Bromwich, the youthful New South Wales player who played brilliantly in the Victorian championships, again came to light to-day, defeating Kirby in a well-fought contest. Bromwich’s play was much admired. Results include:—
Men’s singles: J. H. Crawford defeated A. 11. Temple, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2; D. V. Turnbull defeated Grinstead, , 9-7, 6-4, 6-3; Bromwich defeated Kirby (South Africa), 4-6, 6-,2, 7-5, 6-1; Clemenger defeated J. Brugnon (France), 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. Menzel (Czechoslovakia) defeated Ryan, 6-4, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Men’s doubles: Bromwich and Huxley v. Perry and Hughes, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 (unfinished). Women’s singles: Miss Round (Britain) defeated Miss D. Manger, 6-2, 6-2; Mrs, Hopman defeated Miss Weston, 11-9, 6-0; Miss Dearman (Britain) defeated Miss Wynne. 6-3. 6-2; Miss Blick defeated Mrs, Molesworth, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
NEW PROFESSIONALS?
Perry and Miss Jacobs

Mr. Bill O’Brien, promoter, announced that Miss Helen Jacobs has accepted an offer to turn professional. A later message states that Mr. O’Brien said his offer called-for Miss Jacobs to receive 20.000 dollars for a tour beginning on March 20. Mr. O’Brien said that a fortnight ago lie offered Miss Jacobs 15.000 dollars, but she asked for moi’C money. On Wednesday he cabled his 20,000-dollar of-, fer. . “I know that was what she wanted and know she will accept.” he said. "I mailed a contract to her” Ylr. O’Brien declared that Mrs. Fearailey Whittingstall, formerly Miss Eileen Bennett, had accepted an off-o-of 10,000 dollars and indicated that F J. Perry would sign. He said his representative on the Pacific Coas., Mr Silas Masters, had received a cable on Saturday from Perry asking, Mr. Jlastei's to have a contract ready when ]je arrived at San Francisco on W ■nnrv 23. Perry will receive 40.000 dollars Mr. O’Brien said that none r but tew weeks. ■
