NEW AIR STAMPS

Ready For Use Shortly

CHARACTERISTIC DESIGN

A new set of air-mail stamps has been prepared in New Zealand, and will be put into use within the nexttwo or three weeks. The design, which contains several characteristic New Zealand features, is the work of Mr. G. Berry, of “The Dominion” staff. It shows the airport at New Plymouth, with'.Mount Egmont standing at the back as a guiding landmark. An aeroplane is on the, ground near the hangar, and a large cabin machine is shown about to land. In the left-hand lower corner a Maori stands watching under a tree fern. ■ ’. There will be three values in the new set, the design for each being the same. The penny will be printed in red, the threepence value probably in claret,,'andi.th6 sixpenny value probably in ‘purple, but the colour of the Jast: two depends upon the suitability of the inks available in the stamppi'inting department- of the Governinent Printing Office. The plates and (lies for these new air-mail stamps have been jnade by the stamp-printing branch of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, the line engraving process being the one used. The Commonwealth Bank of Australia has been also responsible for the production of the Melbourne Centenary and other, recent new Australian stamps. The actual printing of the ptamps is being done in Wellington.
