RAROTONGAN EXCURSION

Passengers on Maunganui

The Union Company yesterday received the following wireless message from Captain Toten, master of the R.M.S. Maunganui, sent on January 2 at 2.30 p.m.:— “Th_e return of the Rarotongan excursionists who left Wellington by the Makura on Christmas Eve commenced on New Year’s Eve with a ball on the Maunganui. The crowded floor was the scene of a very bright evening, and a number of dances and songs by a party of Rarotongans in native costume was much appreciated. Late that evening the excursionists bid their island friends a very reluctant farewell. Nineteen hundred and thirty-five wa§ ushered in with due ceremony, and since then weather conditions have been excellent. “Smooth sea and bright blue skies have made deck sports very popular, and kept the swimming pool full. Last evening races were held on deck, and some exciting finishes resulted. To-night they will go to the talkies, and to-morrpw, in addition to the usual deck sports, a gymkhana will be held. The last mgh£ will be made merry by a fancy dress ball.” The Maunganui is due at 'Wellington on Monday morning at 7 .o’clock.
