Island Visited
Trampers spent an invigorating time over the holidays among the snowflecked aud mist-enshrowded peaks and mountain ranges of the South Island alpine regions. The official Tararua Tramping Club party, led by Mr. W. 11. Scott, had Its base camp just above the terminal moraine of the Ramsay Glacier. Ten of the party climber Louper Peak (8168 feet) on Boxing Day. This peak has been ascended only twice previously—by Kitchingham in 1914, and by Pascoe and party in 1931. The Tararua members were the first to make the ascent from the Ramsay side, and for the last 700 feet it was straight-out rock climbing, taking three or four hours. While on their way back the party encountered three members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, who had just climber Mt. Whitcombo (8656 feet), and who went down the Evans Glacier, being the first to take that route, to the Wanganui River, and thence out to the road near Hari Hari
Another party visited Lake Rotorua, travelling by ferry steamer to Nelson on Christmas Eve, and thence by service car, camping- on the River D'Urville. A party from the Paua club visited Queen Charlotte Sound, neat' Liquid Bay, while members «• tiie Hutt Valley club spent their lime in Arthur's Pass. The Godley uistriet was camped in by Wellington members of the New Zealand Alpine Citib.
