EMPIRE DEFENCE
Sir Maurice Hankey’s Recent Tour
COMMENT IN BRITAIN
Newspaper Asks For Frank Statement By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received' January 1, 1.20 a.nu) London, January 3, Though Sir Maurice Hankey, secretary of the committee of Imperial Defence, is hot due to arrive from Canada until Sunday, most newspapers are already giving prominence to the reported outcome of the tour, which' the “Daily Herald” features as the forerunner of a full scheme of Empire defence. It says that Labourites will make another attempt to secure from Air. Ramsay MacDonald a frank statement about “these mysterious transactions.” In the meantime, if Air. AlacDonald does not expedite a statement, the public in the Dominions will soon know far more about the mission than even the House of Commons. “The "Daily Herald” editorially recalls Air. Baldwin’s appeal to Germany to tear awav the veil of secrecy surrounding her military preparations. “It is stupid, mischievous and intolerable that Sir Alaurice Hankey’s perfectly sensible and proper mission should be given the appearance of a furtive conspiratorial errand by Air. MacDonald's pitiful attempt to persuade the House of Commons that he was on a private holiday,” it says. “The newest revelations about the mission make it imperative that the veil of secrecy be torn and the Government give the world a full and frank statement of defence preparations of the Empire.” The “Manchester Guardian” sarcastically contrasts Mr. MacDonald’s emphasis that Sir Alaurice Hankey’s visit had no political significance with reports from Australia in reference to his recommendations, adding: “Whether they should or should not have ’conscription is a matter for Australians themselves to decide. Doubtless the Australian Government asked iSir Maurice Hankey’s opinion, but it jis clearly a serious thing and a most (important departure in policy for the (Secretary of the Committee of Imiperial Defence to advise Australia. lOne must ask in what capacity and as a 'representative of whopi or what body of opinion Sir Alaurice Hankey, is inow. speaking.”
