LIFE-SAVING

Lyall and Worser Bay Clubs DISPLAYS AT LEVIN On New Year's Day some thirty members and supporters comprising two teams, from the Lyall Bay Surf and Life Saving Club and one from the Worser Bay Amateur-Swimming and Life Saving Club journeyed to the Waitarero beach, Levin, at the invitation of the Waitarere Domain Board, to give a demonstration and general instruction in the latest methods of life saving and promote local interest in the life-saving movement with a view toward gaining public support in the formation of a Levin club. Interest was keen and there seems every likelihood of a club being formed at Leviu in the near future.

The Waitarere beach, which extends some five miles south and four miles north with a good expanse of bard sand, suitable for driving on, right to the water's edge is ideal for surf bathing, and has this season proved very popular with motorists, no fewer than 500 cars having been present on' one day. The teams were welcomed by Mr. Hine, president of the Waitarere Domain Board, in the presence of one of the largest crowds yet assembled on the beach. There were visitors from Foxton, Palmerston North, Otaki, and .other towns between 'Wellington and Levin, A march past by the three teams under the capable management of Messrs. I’. Coira, referee, J Milburn and Vic. Allen, beach stewards, opened proceedings, an excellent standard of marching being witnessed and spontaneously applauded. Fine Dispray of Rescue Methods.

The Lyall Bay' A team then followed with a perfect display of the various methods of rescue and release used when goipig to the assistance of those in distress. As each method was demonstrated by the team under the captaincy of S. Muller. Mr. P. Coira, president of the New Zealand Surf Association, gave a running commentary and explained under what circumstances the method would he used. '

In a fairly heavy surf a display in the water with the use of reels was then given. The finishes were close, and the team work almost faultless. The teams comprised:—

The four-man alarm rescue was a stirring event. Members of teams were stationed to keep watch over the bathers from the water’s edge. Ou the alarm being given it was necessary to run up the beach tp the reels, which were placed in readiness, don the belt and proceed to the rescue. Good time was made in this event, and the public was quick to show its appreciation of the excellent judgment shown by the rescuers in reaching their patients and the brisk work of the team to get the patient back on the beach. The teams in this event were:— Lyall Bay A: J. C. Blakeley, beltman; F. Mollier, patient; B. ,L Mclvor, reelman and captain: W. Griffen, lineman. Lyall Bay B: G. Williams; N. Milligan; 11.
